Gecko Control

Useful Information for Daily Life

Gecko control is all about “deodorizing,” a 5-minute solution

Strange noises are a surprise if we live in Bangkok

One of the most surprising things about coming to Thailand is a gecko that makes strange noises and crawls around on the walls of your room.

Many people, especially women, are having hard time with them. Geckos exist in Japan as well, but you rarely see them in urban apartments. There are no geckos with that uncanny sounds.

Eliminate odors that attract geckos

The basic rule of gecko control is to clean the room neatly and finish by spraying high-performance deodorizer around the corners of the room and the ceiling.

Be careful after grilling meat or fish

Geckos seem to like the smell of protein-based odors such as grilled meat and fish. Therefore, after grilling meat or fish, spray high-performance deodorant again.

What works for snakes may also work for geckos…

Geckos are reptiles, so what works for snakes should also work for geckos.

So, I looked on the Internet and ordered a “snake repellent” from Japan (which says it is also effective for geckos) that keeps snakes away. (The main ingredients are wood acid, garlic, etc.) However, when I opened the bag, I found that it had a strong burnt smell and was not something that I could ever put indoors.

None of them reacted.

So, we tried to extract the liquid from the repellent and use it on the gecko. However, the gecko did not run away and did not react. I also ordered wood acid from Japan and tried the same thing, but again, no reaction. Garlic extract, on the other hand, was thought to be food that gecko bit it. I have heard that nicotine solution from cigarettes is also effective, so I have tried it, but still got no response.

I went to ask the Bangkok Snake Garden of the Red Cross Society.

So, I went to the snake garden located near the Sala Daeng BTS station (next to Chulalongkorn University). This is a facility of the Red Cross where dozens of species of poisonous snakes are kept, studied, and serums are made. I asked the staff what smells snakes dislike. The staff replied, “There is no particular smell that they dislike. At first, snakes will be surprised by wood acid, for example, but once they get used to it, they won’t mind it at all.

Accidental discovery of the deodorant’s effectiveness

We did a lot of research, but in the end we could not find any smells that snakes do not like. One day, however, I sprayed deodorant in the room and then, I stopped seeing geckos. It was a completely coincidental discovery.
